About the Department
The Center for Career and Technical Personnel Preparation has housed many grant activities over the years. A brief description of current grant activities are listed below: The New Choices/New Options program offers career counseling, job search assistance, and funding for continued education to single parents/displaced homemakers (low income, unemployed or underemployed individuals), and those exploring non-traditional occupations. Services are offered through eight 60+ hour workshops. For clients who have completed the core program, continued service is provided in creating resumes, cover letters, and ongoing support services. Funds are also provided for career and technical tuition assistance, child care support, and transportation. The New Options program also serves middle school/secondary school students with career counseling. New Choices/New Options is funded by grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Indiana County Human Services Development Fund and IUP. New Choices/New Options works closely with CareerLink, ICW, ICCAP, OVR, The Guidance Center, and the Public Assistance office in Indiana County and CareerLink in Armstrong County. Please visit the following website for more information: http://www.voced.iup.edu/newchoices On July 1, 2000, Secretary of Education, Richard Riley announced the U.S. Department of Education's 16 new National Career Clusters. Projected to bring about "revolutionary change" in Career and Technical Education, the Clusters provide definition, curriculum models and active pilot projects for the Pennsylvania Governor's Institutes for Career and Technical Education. The past four summers, 2000 through 2003, are the history of Governor's Institutes for Career and Technical Education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During those years, the Center for Vocational Personnel Preparation at IUP has directed six Institutes: two in Health Careers, one in Graphic Communications, one in Transportation, Distribution and Logistics, one in Hospitality and Tourism and one emphasizing the integration of the PA Academic Standards in Math. Each institute has gathered teachers from across the state as well as industrial leaders and Pennsylvania Department of Education staff. National leaders from Career Cluster Pilot Sites and curriculum writers with a focus on the national skill standards have led vital institute sessions. Please look for announcements and updates for each career cluster at the five listed web sites.
